Professional fundraisers in India have taken a significant step towards greater organisation of the sector. The Direct Marketing Fundraisers Forum India (DMFFI) brings together fundraisers working with individual donors – both from international and Indian NGOs.
The organisation was formed following a two day masterclass in Delhi given by former Resource Alliance Chair Mal Warwick in September. The drive came from the fundraisers themselves. Already three task groups have been set up to look at improving list quality, negotiating with India Post on mailing costs and delivery rates, and on setting up a formal, democratic fundraising association.
The group has elected retired Wing Commander Sashanka Roychoudhury, head of fundraising at the Delhi based NGO Deepalya as its temporary convenor. Fundraisers from HelpAge India, Plan, World Vision, UNICEF, and SOS Children’s Villages amongst others are involved in the working groups.
Resource Alliance is supporting the group through the involvement of our local programme manager Rati Misra.
After false starts in the past this initiative really does look to have the potential to turn into a professional fundraising association. The fact this group has come together is indicative of how the fundraising market in India is growing.
