Music for a good cause?

Howard Lake | 26 September 2008 | Blogs

On 29 September English Sinfonia are launching a single entitled Towards the Dawn with all proceeds from sales going to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. The work was written by the orchestra’s artistic advisor Geoff Alexander who is a well known arranger of film and television music. It was inspired by a family friend who has had cancer and is a volunteer fundraiser with Breakthrough.
Classical music isn’t normally a money spinner, and especially not contemporary music. But Towards the Dawn has the emotional directness of a film score, and the potential to appeal to a broad audience, so the venture might succeed. The key will be getting airtime on Classic FM, Radio 2 and other popular music stations.
Two years ago English Sinfonia faced serious financial difficulties and Alexander has been helping the orchestra rebuild. Towards the Dawn will not only benefit Breakthrough, it will also help the orchestra gain useful profile. Like all successful corporate tie ups this one benefits both the charity and the company.
