Howard Lake | 6 March 2008 | News

Social welfare charity St Vincent de Paul (SVP) is to name a new centre in Galway after Maureen O’Connell who left a legacy worth €14 million to the charity. The legacy is thought to be one of the largest ever left to a charity in Ireland.
SVP are spending €1 million on a resource centre which will cater for 35 elderly people. Ms O’Connell left her Eyre Square pub to SVP almost 10 years ago and it was sold to developers.
SVP is the most successful charity in Ireland when it comes to raising money from legacies. In a six year period from 1998 to 2003 it raised nearly €22 million from legacies.
