Blog shows continued hostility to chuggers

Howard Lake | 29 January 2008 | News

As the Irish legislature debates measures to tighten up the regulation of chuggers in the new charity bill, a blog in the Irish Times illustrates their unpopularity with the public.
‘SoundingOff’ in the Times shows that some people are very hostile to the presence of street collectors in the major cities of Ireland. One blogger says he boycotts charities that employ them, accusing them of using ‘bully tactics.’
Another blogger considered that they were too well paid while another offered suggestions on how to use avoidance tactics such as pretending to be on the mobile phone.
During the debate on the new charity legislation last week some members of the Irish Dail voiced strong opinions on street collectors and called for more regulation of their activities.
