Sue Ryder Care hits £1m extra target two years early

Sue Ryder Care has reclaimed £1 million from the tax man through its ‘Sign on the Line’ campaign to link Gift Aid to donations of goods brought into its shops.
Originally the charity thought it would take three years to reach the £1m figure, but it has achieved this in just one year. It is the first charity in the UK to develop a system with internet-based system company Eproductive to satisfy HMRC that an audit trail could be established to claim the money. Sue Ryder Care estimates that the system could mean an additional £10 million – £30 million for the charity sector as a whole.
Alan Hodges, director of retail at the charity said: “We are obviously delighted. To secure an additional £1 million from the scheme two years earlier than predicted demonstrates how powerful an income generator this could be, not just for us, but the sector as a whole.
“One of the additional benefits is ore contact with our donors. Staff are meeting with them face-to-face -tore. We then write to donors to tell them how much their donation has raised and, crucially, we can engage them in finding out more about what Sue Ryder Care does.”
