Children’s charity Barnardo’s has recruited 30 university students to become volunteer co-ordinators for its ‘Dare to Care: Make time to help end child poverty campaign’, which hopes to inspire 35,000 people to volunteer their time to help children and families living in poverty.

The students have completed a training weekend with Barnardo’s, where they learnt more about the issues surrounding child poverty as well as developing the skills and confidence needed to tackle the role of volunteer co-ordinator. The students will now be encouraged to find, recruit and lead a team of volunteers both at their university and within the community.

David Booker, Head of Volunteer Development at Barnardo’s said: “Student volunteers are vital to the charity for both fundraising and ‘hands on’ support to our projects and services. We are thrilled at the level of student support for this campaign and we are confident that they will make a huge difference to the lives of children and families living in poverty.’

Dare to Care is headed by volunteering charity Community Service Volunteers and the Campaign to End Child Poverty, a coalition of 90 organisations, including Barnardo’s. The initiative hopes to recruit 35,000 volunteers, to help children from low-income families and raise awareness of the experiences of children living in poverty.

The campaign was launched in mid-September and runs until 29 February 2008. Five children’s charities will each have a themed month, in which to promote their volunteering opportunities. Barnardo’s theme for the month of December is families.
