Youth sports charity the Lord’s Taverners have pledged to donate £1 million to disabled sport over the next five years. They have begun by donating £100,000 to Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball (GBWBA) to aid the development of the sport at junior and grassroots levels.

The donation is the largest contribution to the development of wheelchair basketball since it became formalised in the UK in the 1960’s. The money will be used to develop four specific programmes within the sport covering development in Wales, an annual international challenge, regional junior championships, and development of the junior league and clubs.

John Feaver of The Lord’s Taverners said: “We raise £1.6 million every year which is split equally between cricket initiatives and disabled sports programmes. We have donated over 800 minibuses to special needs organisations and it is hoped that our new £1 million pledge will give youngsters throughout Britain a sporting chance to get involved in disabled sport.”
