Sightsavers Ambassador Graeme Le Saux in webchat at midday

Howard Lake | 30 September 2007 | News

Former footballer and Sightsavers Ambassador Graeme Le Saux will be chatting online today to mark the 20th anniversary of the largest online medical donation programme, in which Merck & Co. Inc donated treatment for prevention of river blindness for as long as it was needed.

As a major supporting partner of the Mectizan® distribution programme, Sightsavers International provided treatment in 2006 alone to over 11 million adults and 3 million children across West Africa.

As a Sightsavers Ambassador, Graeme Le Saux visited Kaduna state in Nigeria where river blindness is endemic to see the progress made by the Mectizan® distribution programme and how it is changing the lives of so many men, women and children across Africa.

He will talk online today about his experiences in Kaduna and the issues Sightsavers faces combating river blindness.

Le Saux became an ambassador ten years ago when he was approached at the peak of his Chelsea career. Over the past decade, Graeme has supported Sightsavers in various campaigns and in the summer of 2007 visited Sightsavers projects in Nigeria. Since his retirement from professional football in 2005 Graeme has worked in TV and radio, including presenting on BBC2’s ‘Working Lunch’ and featuring in ITV series ‘Extinct’. He is also an ambassador for Chelsea FC, working with them on their CSR programmes.
