DSD elaborates on grants programme

The Department of Social Development in Northern Ireland has elaborated on what projects it is likely to fund under the Modernisation Fund at an information event at NICVA. The Fund will provide £15 million for capital projects, with grants ranging from £20,000 to £1.5 million.

The DSD is likely to fund around 12 projects for the largest programme, Infrastruture Pilot Scheme, 20 proejcts in the Community Facilities Improvement Scheme and 40 projects in the Small Capital Grants Scheme. With a deadline of 19th October, DSD has indicated that organisations will hear by the end of the year if they have made it through to the next assessment stage and the first grants — most likely for smaller projects — will be distributed by Spring 2008.

— an expectation that the money will be spent by March 2010.
— that ‘modernisation’ means added value rather ‘more of the same’
— that funding for assets includes both appreciating (buildings) and depreciating assets (equipment)

The DSD will appoint an intermediary body to do the initial assessments within the next few weeks, with an independent panel making the final decisions. The final £1 million of the revenue Modernisation Fund will be allocated in Spring 2008.
