Change.org offers add-on for Facebook

Users of social networking site Facebook now have another fundraising and campaigning tool from a third party to add to their profile pages. Users can install a free application that gives them access to all of Change.org’s features directly through Facebook.

The Change.org application (or ‘app’) allows anyone to raise money for US nonprofits and political campaigns, share information about pressing social issues, and take action by organising volunteer events and co-ordinating emails and Internet-based phone calls to lobby elected officials.

The free add-on creates a widget or badge on your Facebook profile page which shows your profile information on Change.org, “enabling your friends on Facebook to see the important work you’re doing on Change.org to make a difference.”

On the app’s page on Facebook, users are told “Change.org enables you to get involved with over 1 million nonprofits and hundreds of political campaigns”.

The new application was created, according to Change.org, in response to request from some of the 500 or so US nonprofits that use Change.org who were keen to raise money and awareness among Facebook’s user base of 29 million people.

Announcing the new application, a Change.org spokesperson said: “Using Change.org’s new tools we think the nonprofit community will flourish within Facebook and start to engage millions of new potential donors and activists in the important social issues they work on every day.”

There is no indication if or when Change.org will extend to UK charities.
