Microsoft has launched I’m, an initiative in which the company will donate a portion of revenues generated from Windows Live Messenger to leading US nonprofits.

The nine beneficiary organisations are American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Club, National AIDS Fund, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, ninemillion.org, Sierra Club, StopGlobalWarming.org, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and the US fund for UNICEF.

Microsoft says that there is no maximum that can be donated to each nonprofit. However, according to TechBuzz, each participating nonprofit is expected to “receive at least $100,000 each year.”

Windows Live Messenger is a free tool that lets users share real-time instant messaging and voice or video conversations, as well as send photos or documents, and send text messages to mobiles.

Users simply have to place the text code corresponding to the cause of your choice into their Messenger Display Name

Microsoft is promoting the initiative with online videos.
