SCOTTISH CELEBRATION

St Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington has received a donation of more than £5,000, following another successful Burns Night, hosted by Niven Architects.
Darlington-based, Niven Architects have hosted a traditional Burns Night event for the past five years, in memory of Darlington architect Rob Niven who, alongside his wife Meg, was a strong supporter of local good causes.
This year’s event, which was held at Headlam Hall near Gainford, featured all the usual traditional Scottish treats, including two pipers, a haggis supper and classic Ceilidh dancing. Guests were also given an additional treat, with St Teresa’s Hospice Chairman, Alistair MacConachie, being sponsored to attend in full Scottish dress, including a kilt.
In total, the event raised £5,279.36 for St Teresa’s Hospice, which will now be used to help fund the charity’s palliative and respite care services, which include day care, at-home care, counselling and complementary therapies and an in-patient unit.
Rob’s Widow Meg, who is also a partner at Niven Architects, has organised all of the previous Burners suppers, which have raised more than £20,000 for local good causes. However, Meg has now chosen to hand the event over to the Hospice, and they will now be continuing the tradition in Rob’s memory.
St Teresa’s Hospice Director, Jane Bradshaw, said: Niven Architects have supported the Hospice for many years and we are flattered that Meg has now decided to hand the organisation of the Burns Night event over to us. The past success of the supper is due solely to her hard work and we are now determined to do the event justice and raise much-needed funds, while encouraging our supporters to have fun celebrating this Scottish tradition.”
Meg Niven said: The support we receive for the Burns Supper every year is overwhelming. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has helped make it such a special occasion year after year. The supper has become a popular, established annual event and I hope it gives the hospice a good platform for further fundraising in the future.”
