Howard Lake | 29 January 2007 | News

Irish music legend Van Morrison has played at a fundraising event for one of Northern Ireland’s most exclusive primary schools. The £170-a-head dinner was held at the Culloden Hotel for 300 guests.

The charity concert was to raise money for a new arts building at Rockport school. It is understood that Van Morrison was paid a fee for his one and half hour performance.

Meanwhile, a survey of 200 primary schools in the Irish Republic has revealed that over 80 percent depend on fundraising by parents to meet the shortfall in government money. The survey by the Irish Primary Principals Network found that schools received an average grant of ‚€25,000 even though their running costs average ‚€48,000.

The level of fundraising has caused controversy, with some educationalists calling for schools to refuse to continue fundraising.
