Convio to acquire GetActive

US online fundraising and campaigning service provider Convio, Inc. is to acquire competitor GetActive Software, Inc. The combined company will serve more than 1,400 nonprofit organisations.

The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of March 2007, although the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gene Austin, CEO of Convio, Inc, which has helped nonprofits raise more than $500 million online since 1999, said: “This combination will bring together two great companies, each of which has a deep commitment to serving the nonprofit sector.

“Convio and GetActive have always focused on providing nonprofits with the most advanced Internet solutions for developing strong constituent relationships and driving support. Now, we believe our customers will be even better equipped to realize the potential of the Internet for fundraising, advocacy and outreach.”

GetActive has more than 800 clients, including The Humane Society of the United States, AFL-CIO, University of California, CARE, and Oxfam America.

Convio’s clients include American Red Cross, American Diabetes Association, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, AVON Foundation, Easter Seals, Farm Aid, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Sierra Club.

Kintera, the other major US software and services provider for online fundraising and advocacy, was quick to respond to the acquisition, offering nonprofits a “replacement program for Convio and GetActive clients.” It argued that its this “provides your organisation with one comprehensive, integrated technology provider, instead of two niche product providers of nonprofit software.”

Richard N. LaBarbera, Kintera’s Chief Operating Officer, added: “In this rapidly growing market, consolidation can be expected among technology providers. Nonprofits shouldn’t be forced onto a platform that wasn’t part of their initial analysis.”
