Europe's top 50 foundations listed by expenditure

The latest edition of Philanthropy in Europe has published its annual list of Europe’s top 50 foundations by expenditure. Together they donated 4.4 billion euros.

The magazine includes a ranking of Europe’s top 20 richest foundations which, remarkably, are “even wealthier than their American counterparts”. Europe’s top 20 richest foundations control assets of over 117 billion euros, thanks largely to “the secretive foundation” established by IKEA founder and billionaire Ingva Kamprad.

The top 50 list is headed by the UK’s Wellcome Trust, with a surprise entry to the rankings by Volnoe Deloe (Free Deed Foundation) established by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

Issue 25 of Philanthropy in Europe also includes the second part of its in-depth research into the philanthropy of Europe’s leading public companies and a profile of the giving of Russia’s and the Ukraine’s oligarchs.

The subscription-based Philanthropy in Europe costs 240 euros for six 20-page
issues.
