09/01/07
Pupils from Polam Hall School in Darlington have raised more than £1700 towards their charity work in Tanzania, by packing shopping bags at a local supermarket.
Members of the school’s Interact Club spent Saturday, December 23 helping shoppers to pack their bags in the Darlington branch of Sainsbury’s at Victoria Road.
Interact, short for International Action, offers young people the chance to try new activities and make a difference to their local community as well as helping young people in less privileged parts of the world.
The group, which is supported by Darlington Rotary Club is currently supporting a scheme to help orphans in Tanzania and are planning to visit the children in 2008.
Their successful day of bag-packing marked the start of this particular fundraising campaign and added the impressive £1700 total to the fund.
Marie Green, Headmistress at Polam Hall School, said: The pupils worked extremely hard throughout the day, helping shoppers and packing groceries. Everyone in Sainsbury’s seemed to appreciate their efforts, particularly in the Christmas rush and I would like to thank everyone who made donations.”
