SHOPPING EXTRAVANGANZA LEADS TO EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR LOCAL CHARITY
13/12/06
St Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington is benefiting from a £6,000 Christmas donation, courtesy of the Durham Shopping Extravaganza.
Every year, the Durham Shopping Extravaganza hosts a two-day shopping fair at the Ramside Hall Hotel near Durham City. The established event, which is organised by a committee of dedicated volunteers, gives visitors the unique opportunity to stock up in time for Christmas and raise money for a variety of local causes at the same time.
The Durham Shopping Extravaganza 2006, sponsored by Barclays, Northern Rock, Blackett, Hart and Pratt and Darlington-based Vauxhall and Chevrolet dealer, Sherwoods, featured more than 50 stalls selling a variety of goods, including food, clothing, jewellery and toys.
Since its inception the committee has raised more than £200,000 for local causes, including Children North-East and Macmillan Cancer Relief’s County Durham Appeal.
By combining the two-day fee paid by all stallholders, visitors’ entrance fee, proceeds from the fundraising tombola and raffle and a generous donation of 10% of all sales, the 2006 event raised a total of £18,000.
This total will be split between three charities, as nominated by this year’s Durham Shopping Extravaganza Chairmen Jayne Cook and Henrietta Harvey, with £6,000 each going to St Teresa’s Hospice, The Rainbow Trust and the Durham Agency Against Crime.
St Teresa’s Hospice Director, Jane Bradshaw, said: I would like to thank the Durham Shopping Extravaganza and everyone who was involved in or attended the 2006 event for their kind support and generosity. Staff at the Hospice will now use this money to help fund our range of palliative and respite care services and ensure that all guests receive the best care possible.”
Margaret Howell of the Durham Shopping Extravaganza, said: Every year we do our best to raise a substantial amount of money for local causes and the volunteer committee worked hard to ensure that this was also the case in 2006. The charities we donate to change annually and this year the joint Chairmen selected St Teresa’s Hospice as one of three beneficiaries. We are delighted to be able to give them a donation of £6,000 and I am sure that it will benefit a great number of people in the surrounding area.”
Next year’s shopping event is set to take place at the Ramside Hall Hotel on October, 10 and 11, 2007. For more details please contact Margaret Howell on (01429) 836909.
