Environmental Business Product’s Mobile Phone Recycling Reputation
Environmental Business Products logoEnvironmental Business Products (EBP) recycles millions of printer cartridges and mobile phones each year from collection schemes in 12 countries into its London base. This remarkable achievement is accomplished with the help of the supporters of around 50 different European charities, so the issue of reputation is key to the company.
“As Europe’s largest recycler of such products, we value our own reputation as well as those of each of our partners”, states Angela Wiseman, Head of Collections for EBP. “The cartridges we collect are usually sold under the brand name of leading UK retailers, so the reputation issue includes their good name too. When we picked our mobile phones recycling partner we were pleased to note that they were a founding member of CheckMEND”.
Established in 2005 CheckMEND is a global stolen property checking service and has exclusive and unique links to the Immobilise National Property Register, the Insurance Industry and the mobile phone networks. CheckMEND has access to over 8.2 million records of stolen property including blocked and reprogrammed mobile phones from over 32 countries.
EBP’s mobile phone partner was one of the first mobile phone recycling companies to take advantage of the CheckMEND database via their online search portal, and every mobile phone received is checked to see if it’s been reported lost, stolen, or blocked by the networks. “The handling of stolen phones is becoming an increasingly common news story and as a result we are keen to ensure that we are taking the appropriate precautions to ensure that we are able to remove ‘illegal’ handsets that we receive from our collection schemes. We believe this to be an added safeguard for our charity and recycling partners”, states Angela.
Unlike some collectors, EBP reprocesses the printer cartridges themselves and has invested considerable resources for the collection of mobile phones. Inkjet and laser cartridges are remanufactured at their Headquarters in Park Royal, London. A recent independent survey by ‘Which?’ magazine judged EBP cartridges as the only ones that matched the original brands for quality. “EBP works to the very highest standards because we realise that the reputations of our partners are also at stake,” Angela concludes.
