The Directory of Social Change has published the 2006/07 edition of The Educational Grants Directory, featuring updated details of over 1,100 non-statutory sources of financial help, with a combined giving total of over £60 million.

Now in its ninth edition, the Directory gives details of a wide range of funds and other support available for school children and students in need, up to and including first degree level.

Grants for schoolchildren can be made for:

* school uniforms
* musical instruments or sports equipment for children with specific talents
* extra lessons for children with learning difficulties
* equipment for children with disabilities, not available from statutory sources

Grants are also available for young people starting work/apprentices. Many of the older educational trusts were originally set up to give grants to apprentices or to those ‘entering a trade or profession’. Nowadays, this means that grants are made to school-leavers and people leaving further or higher education to start work.

“It is important to stress that most trusts in this guide can only give supplementary help,” said Directory editor Alan French. “The resources available can, however, have far-reaching effects on an individual’s education.”

The director’s listings include:

* local charities
* statutory grants and student support
* company sponsorship
* career development loans
* independent and boarding school funds
* funding from Local Education Authorities

The directory also provides advice on selecting the right source of funds, and ./guidance on how to make an effective application.

The Educational Grants Directory is available at £34.95.
