Public Sector Rich List 2006 published

The TaxPayers’ Alliance, the grassroots campaign for lower taxes, has for the first time published a list of the 171 most highly paid people in the public sector. To qualify people have to earn more than £150,000 a year and work in government departments, quangos, other public bodies and public corporations.

The list is based on research of public documents, and reveals that 46 public sector workers earn over £250,000 a year, 14 earn over £500,000, and 3 earn over £1 million. This works out at an average annual salary of £259,701 for the list members.

The Alliance pointed out that the list members enjoyed “a pay rise of 8.4 per cent between 2005 and 2006” which, they say, “is double average earnings growth (including bonuses) across the country, which is 4.2 per cent.”

The Alliance’s aim in publishing the information is of course to highlight public sector expenditure that it thinks is wasteful or not best value. Matthew Elliott, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Large numbers of people in the public sector are effectively being paid City salaries. It is not surprising that taxes keep going up when the salaries for the public sector^s top executives keep rocketing.”

Nevertheless, the document, available as a PDF (Adobe Acrobat) download at no charge, is a useful addition for prospect researchers.
