Word of mouth marketing, whether online or offline, is such an important subject to marketers that there is even a professional association for those involved in it.
The Word of Mouth Marketing Association (MOMMA) has a blog which reports on the latest research and metrics on word of mouth marketing. Recent reports include:

* Online vs offline WOM – Are the Differences a Big Deal?
It’s fascinating to see the appliance of science to this art, although sadly there doesn’t seem to be a section of the blog dedicated to charities’ use or WOM.
