Ryanair promises its compensation to charity

Howard Lake | 30 August 2006 | News

The low-cost airline Ryanair has launched a £3m compensation claim to the Department of Transport but says that any money it receives from the claim will go to charity.

The claim has been submitted to cover losses incurred as a result of the heightened security at UK airports after an alleged terrorist plot to blow up transatlantic flights was uncovered.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary said the company would not benefit financially should it win the case. As Ryanair’s sole motive in this action is to defeat terrorism by returning airport security to normal, and since we don’t wish to be seen to profit in any way from suing the government, all proceeds received from a successful claim under the 2000 Transport Act will be donated to Ryanair’s nominated charity, Orbis, O’Leary said.
