John Stoker, the former head of the Charity Commission, is to be the first Compact Commissioner.

Stoker, who has been chief executive of the London Bombings Relief Charitable Fund for the last year, takes up his role on 1 October. He will work alongside a yet-to-be-appointed chief executive at the Office of the Compact Commissioner in Birmingham.

He will oversee relationships between government and third sector voluntary and community organisations. Stoker said strengthening the Compact was a key priority. He will be working closely with ministers, senior government officials, regional funding bodies and chief executives of voluntary and community organisations to see how to make the Compaact as effective as possible.

He said: “I expect to see a major difference to the way in which the rules of engagement operate between the VCS and government and will be listening very closely to all of the Compact’s stakeholders to determine the best way to achieve this.”

He will be working a two-day week for a three-year period.
