St Teresa’s Hospice has received more than £1,000, thanks to a unique open day at The Woodlands Hospital in Darlington.
As part of its fifth birthday celebrations earlier this month, the Woodlands Hospital offered visitors the chance to go behind the scenes and raise much-needed funds for the Darlington-based Hospice.
More than 200 people were given free tours throughout the hospital, including the anaesthetic room, operating theatres, recovery room, physiotherapy and radiology departments.
Experts were also on hand throughout the day to provide mini health checks, deliver talks on knee and hip replacement processes and demonstrate plastering techniques, which are used to treat broken bones and ligament tears.
The Woodland’s Hospital Open Day included a number of fundraising activities on behalf of St Teresa’s Hospice, including a raffle, tombola and a blind auction, with a chance to bid for a signed testimonial shirt from Alan Shearer.
Visitors also enjoyed a range of family entertainment activities and refreshments, including an unusual chocolate fountain, which used more than 45 bars of melted chocolate.
In total, the Woodlands Hospital Open Day raised £1,500, with all proceeds going directly towards the work of St Teresa’s Hospice, which provides free palliative and respite care services for patients and carers across South Durham and North Yorkshire.
St Teresa’s Hospice Director, Jane Bradshaw, said: Everyone at St Teresa’s is very grateful to the staff at Woodland’s Hospital for choosing to raise money for the charity as part of their open day. I would like to say a huge thank you to them and to everyone who attended and gave so generously.”
Moira Stokoe, Head of Radiography at the Woodland’s Hospital, said: The Woodlands Hospital chose to help St Teresa’s Hospice, because the charity is very relevant to health care in the local community. The hospital has a lot of oncology patients and we fully appreciate their need for good, local hospice care.
On behalf of everyone at Woodlands Hospital, I would like to say a big thank you to all the local companies and suppliers that helped make the day a success.”
