An Environment Friendly Banger Ready to Rally Across Europe

Howard Lake | 2 August 2006 | Newswire

Matthew Moore and his friends are going to set an example to millions of British car users as they join a charity rally from France to Portugal with a car run on pure vegetable oil.
Like many of us, Matthew is concerned with climate change and carbon footprint we leave behind. This year, however, he has decided to give an example we could follow. Together with his friends he will drive from London to Portugal on a car that uses perfectly renewable fuel – pure vegetable oil that he will shop from Supermarche’s and Supermercados on the way.
His aim is simple – to show people how easy it is to eliminate their carbon dioxide emissions without compromising lifestyles. We are going to give the best example by driving to Portugal and back on vegetable oil. You don’t need to give up your car as long as you run them on carbon-neutral” fuels”, says Matthew. Don’t wait for the car industry and government to offer you a green option, it may be too late.”
The trip to Portugal is a fundraising challenge offered by a London-based charity Gemin-i.org. For Matthew and his team, this is their first charity event and it has not proved a simple challenge: The engine of our donor car fell to bits after 150 miles and needs replacing, but we abound with enthusiasm”, Matthew says. To minimise the risks of our suspect engineering we will be importing Marcus, our Swedish mechanic who has watched all episodes of the A Team, so we are safe.”
Gemin-i.org welcomes the initiative – We are excited about the idea and we thoroughly support Matthew and the boys. I’m just going to make sure I’m not driving behind them”, says Henry Warren, the founder of Gemin-i.org.
The fundraising rally organised by Gemin-i.org runs from Calais, France to the most westerly point of Europe, Cabo da Roca in Portugal and covers about 1300 miles one way. It will take place during August Bank holiday.
