Schools raise £65,000 on World Book Day

Schools across the UK and Ireland have raised a staggering £65,000 for World Book Day charity, Book Aid International – enough to send 47,000 books overseas. Donations from more than 500 schools have been received so far and the money is still coming in.
Popular fundraising activities include sponsored reads, second hand book sales, and dressing up as favourite book characters. Many schools held a reading tent, mirroring travelling reading tents that bring the joy of story-telling and build literacy skills among thousands of African children each year. Book Aid International books are a vital part of such initiatives in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Nigeria.
For World Book Day 2006 – 2 March – every school in the UK and Ireland received a free Sharing Books with the World resources poster. This year’s poster spotlighted the lives of three children from different countries in Africa, and also featured a fundraising chart for the children to colour in.

Hundreds of children also entered a Design a Poster competition, sponsored by Dorling Kindersley. The results will be announced shortly.
