Guardian launches £500,000 awards for individuals to improve communities

The Guardian has launched its Social Enterpreneurship Awards to help individuals improve the communities in which they live.

In partnership with UnLtd, the Guardian is offering £400,000 of awards of up to £5,000 for individuals who need help to get their project started. It is also offering five £20,000 awards for people whose projects can create a sustained impact within the community.

There are five categories of awards:

· Emerging young activists
· Transforming people’s health
· Passion for the environment
· Bringing communities together (including working with refugees)
· Making profits for social purposes

The deadline for applications is June 30 2006.
