Singer and entertainer Cilla Black, whose husband Bobby died in 1999 after a long battle with liver and lung cancer, has been appointed President of Friends of Cancer Research UK.

Cilla will be the public face of the new Friends of Cancer Research UK programme, which has been launched by the charity to provide recognition and thanks to its supporters.

Her first engagement within her new role will be to host a charity dinner in September and to front a campaign for Cancer Research UK’s high value donors.

Cilla Black commented: “Cancer Research UK is a charity that’s very close to my heart. Unfortunately most people in this country, including me, have lost someone close to them to cancer or know someone who has been through the disease. Raising money for research to try to improve this situation is something I believe is vitally important.”

Paul Abbott, Head of Friends of Cancer Research UK, added: “We’re really grateful to everyone who supports Cancer Research UK, whether through signing up to a monthly direct debit or volunteering in one of our shops. Friends of Cancer Research UK has been established to provide us with another way to say thank you to some of our key supporters for everything they do.”

Cilla will be talking to Terry Wogan about her new role tonight on Wogan: Now and Then, which will be shown on UKTV Gold at 19.00.
