Barnardo's opens new charity shop in a women's prison

Howard Lake | 27 April 2006 | News

Barnardo’s has extended its retail activity to a women’s prison, recently opening a shop at HMP Bronzefield, in Ashford, Middlesex.

The new store, which has proved popular with prisoners, sells ladieswear, childrenswear, toys, books and a small selection of menswear.

The charity already has a workshop within the prison, where prisoners paint flower pots, which Barnardo’s sells in its nationwide network of stores. The initiative, which began in November 2004, has been developed in conjunction with the Inside Out Trust, which helps prisoners to learn new skills, improving their employment prospects after release.
