Financial specialists should use website for certificates, says Charity Commission

Howard Lake | 14 March 2006 | News

As the end of the financial year approaches, the Charity Commission is today asking financial specialists to stop requesting certificates proving their clients are registered charities in order to continue to claim Stamp Duty Reserve Tax exemption. Instead, they are being told to visit the Commission’s online register of all registered charities in England and Wales.

Many accountants, brokers and financial advisers believe the need for a certificate is a requirement from HM Revenue and Customs but this isn’t the case. Previously, requests for ‘certificates’ have been answered with a letter from the commission confirming the charity’s status but this will now cease as the commission targets its resources where they’re most needed.
