Charity events exempt from crackdown on illegal roadside adverts

Howard Lake | 7 January 2006 | News

Local planning authorities are being encouraged to clamp down on illegal roadside adverts that risk distracting drivers and which blight the countryside. Adverts that promote local charitable events, however, will not require local planning authority consent.

Housing and Planning Minister Yvette Cooper has announced new measures to crack down on the nuisance posed by illegal roadside adverts such as those on trailers in fields to drivers.

Local planning authorities are being encouraged to take action against offenders and a new national database of organisations prosecuted for advertising illegally by motorways or selling illegal advertising will be created this year.

Advertisements which may be displayed without having to apply to the local planning authority for express consent include those for a local event being held for charitable purposes, and temporary advertisements to be displayed publicising a forthcoming event.
