Charity to raise money in recycling scheme

The Irish Heart Foundation is urging the public to get behind their innovative new fundraising campaign which launched this week. The charity is hoping that supporters will send in their old mobile phones, PDAs and used printer cartridges which the charity can redeem for cash.

The appeal is run in conjunction with recycling experts Redeem Plc who give the charity a cash sum for every reusable handset and cartridge returned.

The funds raised through the appeal will enable the Irish Heart Foundation’s research, education and community activities as they work to reduce premature death and disability from heart disease and stroke. Services they provide include CPR courses and health promotion through their Action for Life schools programme and Happy Heart community groups.

We are delighted to launch the Irish Heart Foundation Recycling Appeal and anticipate a great response from the Irish public. It is so easy to get involved – and completely free. By just taking a few minutes of your time to send in your old mobiles, PDAs and printer cartridges, your waste can be turned into funds to help us continue our fight against heart disease and stroke.

Supporting the appeal not only allows the public to raise funds but also means they play an important role in protecting their environment. Handsets and cartridges can take years to biodegrade – a single printer cartridge takes up to 1000 years to decompose – meaning that if dumped in landfill sites these items can pose a long term threat to the environment. Mobiles, PDAs and cartridges contain toxic substances which can leak into the surrounding soil causing pollution. By recycling these items they are diverted from landfill avoiding the associated environmental problems.
