London Marathon compromises with Silver Bond for charities

The organisers of the London Marathon have responded to a campaign by charities to open up
the Golden Bond system for charity places in the event to a wider audience by creating a Silver Bond scheme to start in 2007.
The Silver Bond scheme will offer 250 places given to Golden Bond holder charities offered to some of the 600 charities who are on the now closed waiting list for Golden Bond places. The new scheme will offer one place to 250 charities every five years. The first 250 charities will receive a place in 2007, the next 250 a place in 2008 and so on until the system starts again in 2012. Selected charities will have to pay £300 + VAT for the place in the October of the year preceding the Marathon.
The Silver Bond scheme doesn’t meet the requests of the coalition of 50 charities which have been campaigning this year for greater access to the Marathon, but it at least offers some hope to some of the currently excluded charities.
