A poll of 2,000 online shoppers reveals growing confidence in spending money online, with one in three content to spend more than £500 on a single item. Charity websites not requesting gifts on this scale could therefore be missing out on this trend.

The YouGov poll found that on average UK online shoppers spend £157 a month. Indeed, 12% of consumers questioned now conduct all their shopping online. Shoppers are gaining confidence with parting with credit or debit card details online: now 87% of consumers questioned will spend £50 or more online, whereas in February 2004 only 63% would be happy doing so.

There is little change in the most popular items bought online, with 70% of shoppers buying CDs, 66% buying books, and 53% buying clothing and electrical goods.

Fundraisers could consider including a £500 option on their online donation pages, or encouraging donations on that scale by detailing what £500 could help their charity achieve.
