Ireland’s national electricity suppler ESB is to donate ‚€1 million a year into a new foundation which will support care for the homeless and suicide prevention programmes. The two areas chosen by the company will be funded under a new scheme known as the ESB Electric Aid Ireland Fund.

The themes which will benefit from ESB Electric Aid were arrived at by way of a staff ballot and ESB chief executive Padraig McManus predicts that the ‚€1 million figure per year will grow.

This new funding initiative partners ElectricAid, the social justice fund of ESB staff and pensioners which was set up in 1987 to contribute to the relief of poverty and emergencies in Ireland and abroad.

This partnership means that ElectricAid will now mainly focus attention on long term sustainable improvement in disadvantaged communities overseas while ESB Electric Aid Ireland will devote specific funding to address targeted areas of disadvantage and need on the island of Ireland.

Grants will be allocated on a quarterly basis, with most grants in the order of ‚€10,000, although there is provision for larger grants. The ESB website has details on how to apply or you can phone James Foley on 01 7027732.
