IFAW doubles online income with stop the seal hunt microsite

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has doubled its online income using a microsite developed by nonprofit sector technology provider Kintera Inc.

The 36-year-old campaign to end the killing of baby seals during the commercial hunting season in Canada has been supported for the first time with a dedicated microsite.

In just two months, the StoptheSealHunt.com microsite (a segment of www.ifaw.org, which Kintera also powers) resulted in a 174% increase in donations and a 108% increase in online memberships for IFAW, compared to the same time period in 2004. The fundraising results included over £65,000 in donations and over 28,000 new online members.

The IFAW microsite allowed people to call for an end to the seal hunt by writing letters to local representatives as well as the Canadian government.

“Creating a specific site detailing our efforts to end the hunt helped us reach a much larger audience, many of whom were not aware of IFAW before, said Fred O’Regan, IFAW’s president and CEO.

Kintera’s web-based tools enabled IFAW staff to maintain all the various elements of the site. The site contained specialised local content and language “to create a truly global web platform” that was customised for each country.
