Charities Bill lost to this Parliament

Howard Lake | 4 April 2005 | News

The Charities Bill has fallen victim to the announcement by the Government of a general election. There is no time for it to be debated in the few days left before Parliament is dissolved.

Geraldine Peacock, Chair of the Charity Commission, said: “We’re very disappointed that the Bill has been lost; this was an opportunity to modernise the legal framework in which both charities and the Commission operate.

“The Bill’s provisions remain essential at a point where the sector is proving its pivotal role as a major contributor to the social economy of Britain. It is important for our voluntary and community sector to be equipped to deliver an invigorated civil society involving all its citizens.

“The Bill had strong support within the sector and all parties. We hope that a future Government will reintroduce a Charities Bill at the earliest opportunity.”

The Bill was due to update and overhaul legislation that was over four centuries old.
