One-day conference on raising funds from the rich

Fundraising consultancy Action Planning is holding a one-day event in April on raising funds from the rich. Speakers include Dr Philip Beresford, author of The Sunday Times Rich List.

Action Planning’s Fundraising Research Team has put together ‘Raising funds from the rich’ in order “to help charities of all sizes recruit rich individuals as major donors.” The event takes place in London’s Westminster on 14 April 2005.

Speakers will include wealth researchers and analysts, major donors, major gift fundraisers, and specialist consultants.

Sunday Times Rich List author Dr Philip Beresford will speak on the changing distribution of wealth in Britain, the motivations and interests of the rich and the leading individual donors to charitable causes.

Lord (Robert) Gavron, founder of St Ives plc and, according to the Sunday Times, one of the UK’s 20 most generous givers, will discuss ways in which charities can develop and sustain relationships with major donors.
Dame Stephanie (Steve) Shirley, one of Britain’s most successful women in business, will share on her experience of making large donations, and of seeking them for her autism charity.

National Trust Major Donor Manager, Justine Webb, will present a case study on how to involve, motivate and retain big givers.

Institute for Philanthropy Deputy Director Beth Breeze will then give some background to the size of the major donor market by present ing the Institute’s social attitudes survey ‘Who are the givers?’.

John Barwick, Head of Charities at International private bankers Coutts & Co, will give ./guidance on how to manage relationships with wealthy individuals.

Action Planning Senior Consultant Simon Craft-Stanley and Research Manager Wendy Baverstock will explain how to use publicly available information to build detailed profiles of the rich, develop appropriate systems to support relationship management, ensure you field your best team and make an effective ‘ask’.

John Pepin and a panel of venture philanthropists will then explain how to use “high engagement giving” to secure both the financial support and the skills of successful business people.

The conference will be held at the Emmanuel Centre, Marsham Street, Westminster, from 10.00 to 16.00. The attendance fee of £125 includes VAT, lunch, presentation materials and a reception with speakers and guests until 17.30.
