Oxfam closes Tsunami appeal
Oxfam closed its Tsunami crisis appeal yesterday, thanking the British public for their generosity in making the appeal the most successful appeal in the organisation’s 60-year history.
As a result of the public response, Oxfam says that its work is now fully funded. It therefore found itself in the very unusual position of not needing to ask for any further money for this work.
Oxfam’s International Director, Jasmine Whitbread said: “We asked the public to give and give quickly and they have done just that. The speed and scale of response has helped us save thousands of lives. The generosity of the British public has meant that we are in the privileged position of having enough money to fund our work.”

Oxfam raised £70 million from the British public for its work in the region. From yesterday Oxfam was no longer accepting new donations for the Tsunami Crisis Appeal, but instead urged people to give money to Oxfam’s work in the world’s less high-profile emergencies, such as its Sudan appeal for work in Darfur.
Meanwhile, Oxfam noted that “governments have still not delivered even half of the money that they promised to the UN [tsunami] appeal”.
