DEC Tsunami Earthquake appeal reaches £76 million

The British public has donated £76 million online and via the phone in under seven days to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Tsunami Earthquake Appeal, and the final total is expected to exceed £100 million.

Brendan Gormley, DEC Chief Executive said this morning: “We believe that we are looking at well over £100 million in total, if donations keep coming in as they are.” The additional income will come in via the Web, telephone, and from the many cheques and cash donations made at Post Offices, banks and building societies.

Given the long-term rehabilitation needs, however, the DEC is asking the public to keep donating using the various options available, including online, over the telephone hotline, by text, or at high street banks or post offices.

This 51st appeal by the DEC since it was founded in 1963 has evoked the largest public response in its history. Indeed, the DEC believes the Tsunami Earthquake appeal “could well be the largest show of support for any public appeal in the UK.”
