Clinton and George Bush senior to lead US private fundraising effort

Former US presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush senior have been asked by President George W Bush to lead the fundraising effort to persuade American individuals and companies to donate to relief efforts for the Asian tsunami and earthquake disaster.
President Bush encouraged Americans to make donations to aid efforts around the Indian Ocean. “I ask every American to contribute as they are able to do so” he said. “In this situation, cash donations are most useful, large and small,” he added, echoing the requests from many aid agencies that people donate cash, not blankets and clothes.
Americans have been contributing already: the American Red Cross has so far received $79.2 million (£41.4 million).
