Amazon.com has donated a large part of its front page to an appeal on behalf of the American Red Cross for its work responding to the South Asian earthquake and tsunami of 27 December.

The appeal, which appears in a prominent box in the centre of the page, encourages visitors and customers to make an online donation to the American Red Cross. “One hundred percent of your donation will go to the American Red Cross”, claims the online bookseller.

As of 00.44, 51,017 donations had been made online, totalling $2,940,420. This yields an average online donation of $57.64.

Refreshing the page demonstrated that donations were still pouring in, with the total amount climbing almost every second.

Amazon.com last donated much of its front page to an emergency appeal in the weeks after the terrorist attacks in the USA on 11 September 2001. Donors gave more than $6.8 million via that service.
