US foundations give $3 billion in international grants for fourth year running
The US Foundation Center reports that international giving by US private and community foundations is still running at at least $3 billion a year.
The Foundation Center has published ‘International Grantmaking III: An Update on U.S. Foundation Trends” which reports that internationl giving by US foundations doubled from 1998 to 2002.
In fact, 2002 saw a drop in total international grants to $3.2 billion, down from a peak of $3.3 billion in 2001. The total dropped again in 2003 to $3 billion but is expected to make modest rises this year.

From 1998-2002 the Foundation Center reports that, adjusted for inflation, international giving increased by 79%, considerably exceeding the 42% increase in overall giving.
‘International Grantmaking III: An Update on U.S. Foundation Trends’ is published in association with the Council on Foundations, and reports on the current state of US foundations’ international grantmaking and the outlook for the future of this kind of giving.
The report reveals that more foundations had become involved in international grantmaking by 2002; that most overseas giving was targeted at Asia, Latin America, Africa, and global programmes; and that health programmes received the largest funding at 32% of all grants.
