Evening Standard notes fewer face-to-face fundraisers

The Evening Standard reports that “now the face-to-face fundraisers – called chuggers, short for charity muggers – seem to have almost vanished” from central London’s streets.

In an article entitled “Decline of the chuggers” Flora Stubbs claims that “a string of UK charities have stopped using chuggers after a public backlash”. She says that “Cancer Research UK, the World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace have taken fundraisers off London’s streets”.

The Evening Standard’s coverage of face-to-face fundraising in London has included claims that some fundraisers did not follow the relevant code of practice, but it
has seldom acknowledged the research that demonstrates that it can be a cost-effective and far less controversial fundraising tool than popularly believed.
