2.8 million people in employer-supported giving schemes

Howard Lake | 7 October 2004 | News

About 2.8 million people in England and Wales participate in employer-supported schemes for giving, according to research on citizenship by the Home Office.

In addition an estimated 1.5 million employees participate in employer-supported volunteering schemes in England and Wales, according to the research. On average they contribute around 68 hours each per year, the equivalent of just under two working weeks. This has an equivalent value of around £1.1 billion a year.

The report, “Employer-supported volunteering and giving: Findings from the 2001 Home Office Citizenship Survey”, reveals the large scale of businesses’ support for giving and volunteering. It confirms that those who get involved with community support while at work are also more likely to be participants in other voluntary and community activities.
