Labour manifesto likely to include promoting student volunteering

The Labour Party’s election manifesto is likely to include a policy that encourages gap year students to volunteer in return for debt relief.

Youth development charity Raleigh International welcomed Labour’s pledge to support and boost volunteering in the UK by offering financial incentives to undergraduates.

Chris Kent, CEO at Raleigh International, said: “We very much welcome initiatives that will positively help the charity sector boost the much needed volunteer resource. But we would encourage Government to design a policy that boosts volunteering in the long-term, and one which encourages people to not only volunteer while taking a gap year but which makes volunteering a part of our every day lives. Raleigh International’s network in the UK is testament to this notion whereby young people who have participated in a life changing Raleigh International overseas expedition return to the UK and get involved in local volunteer projects for the greater good of their communities.”
