Hospital charity's fundraising suspended due to fire safety ruling

The League of Friends of Warrington Hospital has had to suspend its weekly fundraising lottery after fire safety officers ruled that the group’s display materials could be a fire hazard.
Cheshire Fire Brigade’s safety officers found that the charity’s standing lottery display and mobile ticket trolley could constitute a fire hazard, so all fundraising in the foyer and corridors has been banned for the time being.
The fire safety officers found that the table had not been the subject of a risk assessment. A spokesman for Cheshire Fire Brigade told Manchester Online that “this can easily be done by the hospital’s own fire safety officer, in conjunction with the League of Friends. It may mean they have to move to a different location within the hospital, but it should be possible to work something out.”

While the League of Friends was dismayed that the ruling, their experience shows that charities and voluntary groups do need to ensure that their fundraising activities comply with relevant legislation.
