CFDG appoints data protection firm to advise its charity members

Data Protection For Business, solicitors Rowe Cohen’s service offering expert legal advice to organisations, has been appointed by the Charity Finance Directors Group to service its membership base of over 1,000 charities.

Stewart Room, head of data protection at the law firm, warned that too many UK charities are still inadvertently flouting data protection laws. “Charities typically employ a range of workers”, he explained, “from administrative staff to volunteer representatives, such as high street donation collectors, working on a part-time and ad hoc basis, and therefore find it more difficult to ensure that each employee understands their data handling responsibilities.”

He recommended that “all charities should review their database policies to ensure that the information they hold is both secure and correctly used.”
