Charity Commission publishes top charities' accounts online

From the beginning of April, members of the public have been able to scrutinise the accounts of over £10 billion of charitable income via the Charity Commission’s Web site.

The Charity Commission has launched its online database of charity accounts and governing documents, starting with those of 300 leading charities in England and Wales. The initiative is an attempt to promote greater transparency and accountability in the sector.

The new database of charity financial information is part of the Charity Commission’s eBusiness strategy that, over the next two years, will enable charities to file their annual returns online and new organisations to register as charities online.

This first stage is a pilot project. It includes data from 100 charities in Llandudno and Dorking as well as that from the 300 large charities.

The Commission says that this new service will be complementary to that which will be launched by GuideStar UK in April 2005.
