Tolkein first edition donated to Oxfam shop

Howard Lake | 30 March 2004 | News

The Oxfam shop in Colchester has been given a first edition of JRR Tolkein’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

The book, which is worth several thousand pounds, according to the Evening Standard, was found in a carrier bag full of other ordinary books. The donor was anonymous.

Surprise donations can make a fundraiser’s day, but this windfall will also be partly due to Oxfam’s use of skilled volunteers who can spot such valuable items.
